Tudor, the little brother of Rolex, has unveiled a very interesting dive watch at Baselworld – the Pelagos. It not only has all the prerequisites of a good dive watch, it has the a unique bracelet and clasp, the you could argue make it the world’s most advanced watch bracelet and clasp.

The clasp has a unique spring-loaded self-adjusting system which has been patented by Tudor. The clasp adjusts to the changes in your wrist’s thickness, which is especially crucial as the human body goes deeper underwater. Basically, Tudor’s clasp contracts as your wrist diameter changes underwater, (where many watches would actually loosen due to increased pressure). The clasp also has three fine position adjustments for even further optimization of the fit.

Furthermore, the 42 mm satin-finished titanium case can go an impressive 500 meters (1,640 feet) deep (the Submariner is rated to 300 meters). It even comes with a helium gas escape valve (a feature found on the Sea-Dweller but not the Submariner). Luminescent “snowflake’ Submariner hands and square hour markers pay homage to the past (specifically ref. 94110). The bezel features a scratch resistant Cerachrom (ceramic) insert, a technology which was pioneered by Rolex.

But they didn’t stop there, they also micro-ball blasted the surface to give it a nice matte finish. Tudor even integrated luminous markers directly into the bezel, something Rolex did with the Bakelite bezel from the GMT ref. 6542, but no longer does on any of their watches. Very cool. Apart from its movement, the Pelagos beats the famed Submariner in almost every way. If you don’t mind the Tudor name, or the fact that the Pelagos uses a more common ETA 2824 instead of the in-house Rolex 3135 movement – then save yourself more than three grand off the price of a Submariner and get this.
