Baselworld 2017: Casio G-Shock MR-G “Aka-Zonae”

This week at Baselworld 2017, Casio announced a very special version of their high-end titanium cased MR-G collection, which is clad with a unique deep crimson red color that pays homage to an elite warrior unit that was part of a feudal clan during Japan’s medieval Sengoku “Warring States” period. The red color was adapted from traditional Japanese armor, known as “aka-zonae” (or red-colored armor), which symbolized strength and unity.

The G-Shock MR-G “Aka-Zonae” comes in a black PVD plated pure titanium case, that according to Casio, is exceptionally scratch resistant thanks to a process where the titanium is heated in a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen gas used to a 20-30µm hard layer on the material’s outer surface. Further, as part of a dual-layer hardening processing, after the titanium is hardened, DLC (diamond-like carbon) coating is applied to the surface to reinforce its abrasion resistance.

GPS Hybrid Wave Ceptor technology utilizes time-calibration signals from both GPS satellites and standard atomic time radio wave transmissions (MultiBand6) to ensure the time on your watch will be accurately calibrated anywhere on earth – indoors or out – with automatic adjustments for daylight savings time.

In addition to the GPS Hybrid radio-controlled system, the watch features solar-powered timekeeping which allows light in through-the-dial to charge the watch. The power reserve of the battery can last for 7 months, after a full charge, even with no exposure to light.

The titanium case and bracelet are satin- brushed for a completely matte finish. Gold-plating on the indexes, crown, lower pushpiece, part of the bracelet clasp, and front screws, add a luxurious touch to the elegant black, white, and crimson color scheme.

A feature called “Clad Guard Structure” integrates the crown, pushpieces, and guards to increase shock resistance. Further shock protection is achieved by packing “Alpha Gel” αGEL® into the crown’s head.

The crown is gold-plated, with “MR-G” engraved on the end, and features a knurled design that makes it easy to grip, even with gloves on.

Luminous material is applied to the hour and minute hands as well as the indices, however, to ensure visibility in any condition – even in complete darkness – there is also a “Super Illuminator” (high-brightness LED light) to illuminate the dial.

A high-transparency, abrasion-resistant sapphire crystal with a non-reflective coating protects the dial and ensures clear visibility.

This watch has a dual dial world time function that allows you to view the time in 2 cities simultaneously. The function can access times in 40 different time zones. And an automatic daylight saving time setting function reduces the need for manual time correction.
