Hands-On with Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Openworked Extra Thin Rose Gold

Following up the Royal Oak Openworked Extra Thin in platinum that was released in 2012 to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the iconic Royal Oak, Audemars Piguet released an 18K rose gold version of the same watch at SIHH 2014.

It comes in the classic Royal Oak Extra-Thin case that measures 39 mm by 8.04 mm, and is powered by caliber 5122, which is just 3.05 mm thick. The in-house made movement has a balance cadence of 2.75Hz with 245 total components (36 jewels) and a 40-hour power reserve. The bridges and main plate have been manually finished. The balance is free sprung with variable inertia blocks used for precision adjustments. The skeletonized oscillating weight runs on four jewels and can be custom decorated upon customer’s request.

There is no seconds hand, just hour and minute hands. The date wheel is made of sapphire crystal with transferred numerals, and it is visible around the peripheral of the dial, with an aperture at 3 o’clock. The openworked slate grey dial features rose gold applied hour markers and Royal Oak hands with a luminescent coating.

Glareproofed sapphire crystal and caseback. Non-locking crown. Water-resistance is 50 meters. 18K rose gold bracelet with AP folding clasp. Retail price is $85,800.
