Introducing the Armin Strom Edge Double Barrel To You

The Edge Double Barrel caliber ARM16 is built in-house, like all of the movements coming from Armin Strom. Most notably, the grey ruthenium treated main plate and bridges have an unconventional “cross-grinding” finish, completed with hand bevelled edges, all visible on both the dial and caseback sides of the watch.

This year at Baselworld, Armin Strom debuted an all-new timepiece, called the Edge Double Barrel, which preserves the brand’s signature off-center dial configuration and gains a new movement and case.

Hours and minute are displayed by large polished steel hands, which have a generous amount of luminous treatment. These are the same hands used across the entire breadth of the Armin Strom collection. What is new, is the large Arabic numerals printed in silver on the black azurage inner chapter ring for each hour, except 9 o’clock. White minute graduations mark the outer ring, and the Armin Strom moniker is displayed vertically off-center on the right side, on top of a screwed down, plate cut-out that has the same cross-ground finish as seen on the movement.

This new configuration a contemporary, industrial aesthetic, and the Arabic numerals make the dial easier to read.

The small seconds subdial at 9 o’clock, has an up/down power reserve display, visible underneath the skeletonized, continuously running seconds hand. Being that this is a manual wind timepiece, with a massive 8-day power reserve, the indication is a useful touch. You can literally wind it all the way and not need to wind it again for more than a week.

Armin Strom decided to go with a larger case size, and while this is something many purists with likely scoff at, they did manage to produce a 46.80 mm x 13.20 mm case that does not look enormous. In fact, it wears quite well. The stainless steel case is treated with a matte black PVD finish, with polished accents on the bezel edge, the lip at 6 o’clock, the lugs edges, and the crown. Further, the new “edgier” look, is thanks to a notched bezel design, spider crown, lugs and left case flank that has had some of the material removed, and crown guards.

Technically, the new manufacture movement, caliber ARM16, beats at 2.5Hz (18,000 vph), has 194 components, including 34 jewels. The impressive power reserve is good for 192-hours (or 8 full days), thanks to double barrels, which are visible through angular cut-outs on the backside, as well as through the dial opening on the front. Additional features include an escape wheel and pallets made of gold with hardened functional areas, and a screwed balance with Breguet overcoil.

Each piece is water resistance is 50 meters and is delivered with a black alligator strap and double folding clasp in stainless steel black PVD as well as additional black rubber strap. Limited to 100 pieces. The price is CHF 26,900. (Ref. ST16-EB.90)
