Introducing the Seiko Prospex Air Dive “Monster”

At Baselworld 2014, Seiko unveiled their redesigned Prospex line, which will now be sold globally. Of the models we saw — the Prospex Air Dive “Monster” in a black PVD treated stainless steel case — was the most interesting.

The Monster line is well known as one of the most affordable automatic mechanical movement powered dive watches on the market, and now two redesigned Prospex versions — a black with blue accents, and a black with gold accents, will be available worldwide. (The model pictured above is a pre-production model — the production version will have a blue bezel, as shown at here.)

The case diameter is 42.3 mm and the dial has the signature large luminous filled hour markers (in this case shark tooth-shaped markers), along with large easy to read luminous hour and minute hands. The central seconds hand also has lume on the tip.

The dial is protected by Seiko’s proprietary Hardlex crystal, which is a hardened mineral crystal designed to be hard like a sapphire, without as much tendency to shatter and that can be produced at a very low cost.

The caseback is solid and screwed-in, the crown (located at 4 o’clock) has a knurled surface and screws-down for a water resistance rating of 200 meters. The bezel rotates unidirectionally and features luminous material so it can be read underwater.

The movement is Japanese Seiko caliber 4R36, which is a 3Hz self-winding movement with 24 jewels, a 41-hour power reserve, stop seconds and the ability to be hand wound.

The Seiko Prospex Air Dive “Monster” should hit retails later this year. The retail price is $475 on rubber strap and $595 on bracelet. (Ref. SRP581K1 – black case with blue accents, SRP583K1 – black case with gold accents)
