Creating a timepiece this light required the use of a special composite material called “Innovative Technical Revolutionary Resin” (or ITR) combined with Kevlar/carbon to create the case middle, bezel, back, and crown. The material is extremely difficult to manufacture, although the advantages of using this high-tech resin results in a case that it is eight times lighter than steel and four times lighter than titanium, according to Montblanc.
The TimeWalker Pythagore Ultra-Light Concept is one of the lightest mechanical timepieces in the world – at a mere weight of 14.88 grams.
The case measures 40 mm x 9.7 mm. Notably, the horns of the watch are made of titanium, which have been skeletonized for further weight reduction, as well as satin-finished and treated with a black DLC coating that provides a contrast to the smooth matte finish on the bezel. The crown features an inlaid black and white Montblanc logo. Interestingly, mineral crystals are used front and rear, instead of more scratch resistant sapphire crystals. Water-resistance is rated at 30 meters.
Further weight reduction was achieved thanks to the specially designed skeletonized titanium mainplate and bridges. The total weight of the movement is just 4.73 grams.
On the dial side, you can see the titanium mainplate, which also acts as the dial, and features an engraved black Arabic numeral at 12 o’clock, as well as black dots marking each hour, and a white transferred minute track, all sharing the outer chapter ring. A red-tipped arrow-shaped hand in the subdial at 6 o’clock indicates small seconds. Matte black DLC skeletonized Dauphine-shaped hands indicate hours and minutes. Both chapter rings have a straight grained finish, while the center of the mainplate, that is visible on the dial side, has a frosted finish.
The TimeWalker Pythagore Ultra-Light Concept is powered by caliber MB M62.48 and was inspired by a historic Minerva Pythagore movement, with bridges shaped to follow Pythagoras’s Golden Ratio. As mentioned above, the skeletonized main plate and the five bridges have all been crafted out of titanium. This results in extreme lightness while preserving the robustness of the movement.
The hand-wound movement beats at 2.5Hz (18,000 vph), has 153 total components, 19 jewels, and a 50-hour power reserve. Finishing of the movement includes gold-plating on certain components, circular-graining, chamfering, and pinions that have diamond polished faces and toothing, with burnished pivots.
Each timepiece is certified by the Montblanc Laboratory Test 500, which is the equivalent of chronometer testing. Shown with a black nylon textile strap with calfskin lining. (Ref. 114926)
