Pre-owned Tails and Heads with Govberg Watches

You may not know that outside of selling new watches, they do a brisk pre-owned business. ProfessionalWatches is partnering with the folks at Govberg to bring you inside of their pre-owned vaults. Over the coming months, we’ll be bringing you thematic coverage of some of our favorites pieces in their vast inventory. Many people know Govberg watches, they’ve been around since 1916. They’re one of the east coast’s premier authorized dealers of Rolex, watch brand Audemars Piguet, the best Patek Philippe, and many others.

Today’s edition: Summer watches

As summer approaches, many of you may be looking for the perfect swimsuit or beach attire. Have you thought about what watch you’re going to wear? Maybe you have a dress watch and need a good dive watch. Perhaps your vintage diver isn’t the best option to go swimming in the ocean with. On a recent afternoon, I had the chance to sit down with Govberg and go through their pre-owned inventory of nearly 1,000+ watches, here are some of my favorites for summer.

Summer watch #1: A weekend in the Hamptons

Imagine yourself in the Hamptons, walking down rows of shops on your way to brunch. Perhaps you’re in t-shirt and blue jeans. What else would you need? A watch of course! This beautiful Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Chrono fits the bill. A limited edition of 300 pieces celebrating Montauk Highway. Which is the road that you probably drove to the Hamptons on. The aqua blue dial and croc strap will set you apart from your brunch compadres. Water-resistant to 100 meters (333 ft) it’s also the perfect watch for an occasional dunk in the Atlantic Ocean.

The price is $19,750.

Summer watch #2: The daily beach wear

Panerai makes a solid dive watch. Being that they got their start making dive watches for the Italian Navy, they know a thing or two about dive watches. This heritage inspired piece joins PAMs long lineup of dive watches. Waterproof to 100m (328ft) this Luminor 1950 edition is a tremendous buy. The piece is more than enough watch for catching waves or doing a deep sea dive. I can attest from personal experience that the strap is as comfortable as can be. This piece is priced under $7,000 and includes the original box and papers.

The price is $6,850.

Summer watch #3: A day at the airfield

When I was a teenager, my childhood hero was Chuck Yeager. I even ended up getting my pilots license at 16. Sadly, civil aviation is an expensive hobby. However, IWC pilot watches are perfect for the fighter pilot in all of us. For me, the Mark XVII is one of the highlights of their collection. The unique date display and highly legible dial design set this piece apart from the crowd. This piece usually comes on a croc strap but the metal strap is a definite upgrade. Safe flying.

The price is $3,450.

Summer watch #4: The race track chrono

Vacheron Constantin recently upgraded their entire Overseas line. Their revamp is your reward as their old Overseas models can be had for an absolute steal! A guilty pleasure of mine is NASCAR racing, and each year I watch the Pocono races. This Overseas chrono is practically new and the perfect watch to wear to the track.

The price is $12,750.

Summer watch #5: If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right

In the summer road trip movie “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”, Johnny Depp’s character (Raoul Duke) tries talking his friend into a road trip to Las Vegas. Part of Raoul’s sales pitch takes place around a pool at the Beverly Hilton hotel. After going through a laundry list of “activities” they’ll take part in on the trip, Raul says “If a thing’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right”. This Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore diver in ceramic embodies a lot of the same sentiment. Sure, you don’t need a radically inventive watch from one of Switzerland’s most famous maisons. A watch that will look great on the beach or the boardroom. The white color will contrast well with nearly everything in your closet. It’s only fitting that our last watch in this summer lineup is the most horologically “fun” piece of the lot. Even if you don’t end up buying this bad boy, go give it a Google search and read about how AP packs so much awesome into this piece. At Raoul says, if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right.

The price is $25,900.
